Horror 102: My Favorite Horror Movies

As you know, Dilettantes…the 10th month is here and I am overjoyed!  It’s my favorite time of year and last year, I learned how to celebrate it as only I can.  Last year, I began a series called Horror 101, where I brought to the forefront a mixture of my favorite horror novels, horror stories, horror movies and horror TV shows.

This year, I plan to continue the series.  I am going to focus strictly on horror movies.  When I first came up with this idea, I foolishly thought I could do a top 10 list of my favorite horror movies.  I shared this idea with Noob, a fellow horror head, and she promptly laughed in my face.

Why?  Because there ain’t no way on God’s green earth that I can narrow down my favorite film genre to just 10 movies.  I love it way too much and there’s so many horror categories that it wouldn’t be difficult to do a top 10 list from each category.  So we discussed it and I decided that it would be better if I made a list of my favorite movie from ten to twelve different horror categories.  Noob thought that was way more reasonable, and she’s absolutely right. Spoilers ahead.

Slasher/Serial Killer

So I will begin this year’s Octoberfest with a classic: John Carpenter’s Halloween.  I’m #TeamMichaelMyers and have been for years.  What always struck me about this film, which dropped in 1978, was the opening and how immediately creeped out I was once young Michael dons the clown mask…and we see things from his perspective.  I was a young’un when Halloween came out, so looking at the world through Michael’s mask’s eye holes freaked me out in a way I still can’t explain.  To this day, that opening scene gives me the willies.

Michael Myers, (aka The Shape) one of horror’s legendary slashers, scared the shit out of me when I was a child.  It was that mask that did it.  Of course, learning later that it was a modified William Shatner mask changed absolutely nothing.  That pale white face is the perfect screen to project one’s fears onto and even though I was terrified, I couldn’t stop watching the movie.  I’ve seen it over 100 times, I’m sure, and I still get antsy that Laurie won’t make it to the end.  Michael was on her ass like white on rice.  But thanks to Dr. Loomis, she survives…and so does Michael.

Jason Voorhees never did it for me, but Michael knocks it out of the park.  Definitely true love.

  1. I feel the exact same way when it comes to kung fu movies. I already watched probably close to 500 of those suckers. There is just no way I could ever narrow it down to my top 10. IMPOSSIBLE!!!
